I think I can help. During World War I, In "Defenseless America," he pointed out the inferiority of the American defense system and the vulnerability of the country against attacks of foreign aggressors. His good friend, Elbert Hubbard, died on the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed by a German submarine. Likely due to revenge, this event fueled his belief that the USA should improve its defenses and join the war against Germany on the side of the Entente. On the plus side, he was an important member of the College of Fellows at the Academy of Nations, which may or may not have been an organization that promoted peace. I can't find anything about that.

I'm sure there were calenders back then and these people who were born into slavery were able to figure out their age. After about 10 I would think a person would start to question how old they are if they do not know. It is quite possible to live to this sort of age, especially when there is no fast food and etc around. The food they ate was probably fairly healthy. It is not fair to assume anyone born into slavery has no idea about things they surely investigated and questioned their entire lives!
